SerialForge

Teach SOLIDWORKS PDM your numbering system.

SerialForge puts project, product and part numbering in SOLIDWORKS PDM under clear rules. Design token-based numbering schemes, create new project and product folders from templates, and name files automatically with conditional rules based on card variables, folder path or file type — from the menu or on a workflow transition.

Modules

The modules included with SerialForge and what each one does.

Numbering Schemes

Define your numbering structure with tokens.

  • Token-based schemes such as [Prefix].[Project:000].[Product:000].[Seq:000]
  • Counter start values; first free number or highest + 1
  • Counter scope: global, project, product or card value

Folder Templates

Create new project and product folders with a standard structure.

  • New Project / New Product from the right-click menu
  • Subfolder trees created from templates
  • Folder card variables filled in automatically

File Naming Rules

Give every file type the right number automatically.

  • Conditional rules by card variable, folder path and file type
  • Example: top-level assembly → .0, subassembly → .SA.[Seq], library part → MC-[Seq:000000]
  • Triggered from the menu or by a workflow transition you choose
  • Rename the linked drawing too, or write only the BOM name if preferred

Counters and Permissions

Secure counters, controlled numbering.

  • Counters stored in a dedicated schema in the vault's SQL database
  • Encrypted connection with a connection test in the UI
  • Initialization tool that scans existing numbers and seeds the counters
  • Permissions per user and group

Key features

  • Flexible, token-based numbering schemes
  • Counters scoped to project, product or card value
  • Standard project and product folders from templates
  • Conditional file naming rules
  • Automatic naming on workflow transitions
  • Linked drawings renamed together with their models

Benefits

No duplicate numbers

Counters are managed centrally, so the same number is never issued twice.

Rule-compliant names

File names are generated from your numbering system instead of typed by hand.

Quick start

Existing numbers are scanned so counters continue where they left off.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about SerialForge.

Can I keep my existing numbering system?

Yes. Schemes are designed around your current numbering structure, and the initialization tool scans existing numbers in the vault to start the counters where they left off.

Can naming run automatically on a workflow transition?

Yes. Run rules from the menu or attach them to a workflow transition of your choice; files are named automatically when they move to that state.

How is this different from built-in SOLIDWORKS PDM serial numbers?

SerialForge builds on built-in serial numbers with project- and product-scoped counters, conditional naming rules, folder templates and renaming of linked drawings.

Can I try it for free?

Yes. PDM+ runs free with every product for 15 days from the moment it is added to the vault; no credit card required.

How is PDM+ installed?

Your PDM administrator adds the PDM+ add-in to the vault once using the SOLIDWORKS PDM Administration tool. The add-in and its settings are distributed from the vault to every client automatically — nothing needs to be installed on individual workstations.

How is it priced?

PDM+ products are licensed annually per vault, regardless of the number of users. The license is bound to the vault and stored in it, so every client uses the same license.

Which SOLIDWORKS PDM versions are supported?

SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional 2021 and later.
